    Post of Laboratory Manager

    Research Support Services Directorate

    The Research Support Services Directorate (RSSD) at the University of Malta (UM) is seeking to recruit a Laboratory Manager (LM).

    The Laboratory Manager will be part of the Research Support Services Directorate at the University of Malta, and work in close collaboration with the scientists and technical staff of his/her designated Faculties and Institutes to ensure efficient, safe and proper use of the laboratories and related infrastructure.


    Eligibility

    We are looking for a candidate who is a team player and is great at communicating with people across various entities to coordinate projects related to laboratories.

    The ideal candidate must be pro-active, have experience working in laboratories and is familiar with laboratory infrastructure, tendering processes and laboratory management.



    The candidate is required to:

    • Be in possession of an engineering or science Bachelor's degree. Candidates who are in possession of, or are in the process of obtaining, higher relevant qualifications will be preferred.
    • Have at least five (5) years of experience working in a laboratory environment including at least three (3) years of supervisory experience
    • Have experience managing projects and using project management tools. Having certification or masters in management will be considered an asset.
    Additionally, applicants must be able to work under pressure, to prioritise and to meet deadlines. They must have effective communications skills, and excellent knowledge (oral/written) of the English language. Planning, organising, and good interpersonal skills are essential.

    Experience with writing and implementing laboratory Standard Operating Procedures, undertaking risk assessments, H&S in laboratories, laboratory certification procedures and/or other qualifications in quality management are considered to be an asset.

    The annual salary for 2022 is €30,503 rising by annual increments of €641 up to a maximum of €34,349.

    Candidates will be entitled to an annual performance bonus of up to 8% per annum of basic salary.

    Further Information

    The Laboratory Manager (LM) will be part of the RSSD which is headed by the RSSD director.

    The LM will report to RSSD senior management and work in close collaboration with the scientists and technical staff of the university to ensure efficient, safe and proper use of the laboratories and its infrastructure.

    Therefore, the role necessitates that the candidate is pro-active and adopts a solution-focused approach.

    Laboratory Managers employed with RSSD provide comprehensive support to researchers, academics and laboratory personnel to maintain a high-quality working environment within the University's laboratories.


    Specific duties include but are not limited to:

    writing and implementing Standard Operating Procedures; assisting in the development of risk assessments, assisting in facilities upgrade projects and laboratory tendering processes.



    The appointee is expected to work:

    • On a full-time basis, and will not be allowed to engage in any other gainful employment without the permission of the Council;
    • At such places and during such hours as may be determined by the University Authorities. The Selection Board Procedures
